Ingredients (240 ml cup used)

  • ½ cup oats
  • ¼ cup tuvar dal
  • 1 cup water for dal
  • ¾ to 1 cup water for oats
  • ghee or oil as needed
  • few cashews (optional)
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 red chili
  • ¼ to ½ tsp cumin/ jeera
  • ¼ to ½ tsp mustard
  • pinch of hing
  • 8 shallots or 1 small onion sliced
  • 1 small carrot chopped
  • few capsicums chopped(optional)
  • few beans and peas (optional)
  • salt as needed
  • tamarind as needed

sambar powder or use bisi bele bath powder

  • ½ tsp chana dal
  • ½ tsp urad dal
  • 1 red chili
  • ¼ tsp plus a pinch of cumin/ jeera
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • ½ to ¾ tbsp coconut fresh or dry

How to make the recipe

  1. Cook dal till smooth in a pressure cooker or in a pot. Mash it to smooth.
  2. Add more water and bring it to a boil. Add oats and cook until soft.
  3. Add sambar powder and tamarind juice or paste.
  4. Cook on a low heat for 3 minutes.
  5. Make the seasoning by heating ghee in a pan. You can also fry cashews and set aside.
  6. Add red chili, cumin and mustard when they crackle, add curry leaves and hing.
  7. Fry the veggies in this seasoning for 2 to 3 minutes. Pour water good enough to cook them until soft.
  8. When completely cooked, add the seasoning to the cooked oats.
  9. Stir and simmer for a while.
  10. Serve oats bisi bele bath with pickle or papad.
